How To Change Hyundai Headlights

One important safety precaution while driving is ensuring your headlights are in good working condition. However, it is normal for your headlights to fail over time. Ignoring your failing headlights can attract heavy fines, affect your night visibility, and lead to road accidents. When you notice signs your headlights are failing, including flickering, dimming, or one bulb going off completely, immediately change your headlights to ensure compliance with the law and your safety. Read on to learn the guide to changing your Hyundai headlights.

Step-by-step Guide on Changing Your Hyundai Headlights

  • To ensure your safety, park your Hyundai vehicle, turn off the engine, and remove your keys from the ignition.
  •  Then, open the engine compartment. Pull on the hood release located beside the dashboard, and you should hear the hood pop up.
  • You will see a cap at the back of the headlights housing. Remove the cap by turning it counterclockwise till it comes off. Once it comes off, you can see the light bulb.
  • Next, push down the two tabs of the electrical plug attached to the light bulb's base and pull them away from the socket. Gently unscrew the old headlight till it comes off the headlight socket.
  • The final step is to install the new Hyundai headlight carefully. Make sure the rubber gasket on the cap is intact, then firmly screw in the new headlight bulb without touching its glass. Your light bulb is at risk of burning up when heated if it has dirt, sweat stains, or oil on it.
  • Close the hood of your Hyundai vehicle. With the new bulb firmly positioned in the socket, your headlights should be good as new and ready for day or night drives.

What Causes Your Hyundai headlights to Fail?

  • Old Age: One common reason headlights get burned out is old age. After using your Hyundai headlights for an extended period, they may start dimming or flickering and need a replacement.
  • Extreme Weather Conditions: Besides age, extreme temperatures can cause your Hyundai headlights to burn out. The light bulb filament of the headlight is a very delicate part that is easily affected by extreme cold or heat.
  • Oxidation: if your Hyundai model uses halogen bulbs, it can get burned out due to oxidation of the plastic housing. Once you notice the plastic housing appears yellowish or white, it is oxidated, and you will need to replace the entire headlight assembly.
  • Cracks in the Bulb Housing: it is important to note any cracks in your bulb housing even after a replacement, as halogen bulbs don't do well with moisture and will quickly get burnt out. Hence, avoid touching the bulbs with your fingers while replacing them, as the salt from your sweat can cause burnout. Instead, use rubber gloves during installation.
