How To Change Hyundai Engine Oil

One important thing you have to do from time to time to keep your car running in perfect condition is to change the engine oil. Depending on your type of vehicle and driving habits, you may need to change your oil every three months or after a 3000 miles drive. If you drive a Hyundai Elantra, you may need an oil change every 7500 to 10000 miles. Luckily changing your Hyundai’s engine oil is inexpensive, easy, and can be done at home. Read on to learn easy D-I-Y steps to changing your Hyundai engine oil.

Elevate Your Vehicle

  • The first thing to do is to park your Hyundai vehicle on a flat surface in your driveway. Ensure you choose a leveled spot with enough space to work on all sides of your vehicle. Proceed to park the car, remove the keys from the ignition, and apply the parking brake. You must let the car sit for about 10 minutes to allow the engine oil to cool down to avoid burns and injuries when draining the oil.
  • Jack up your car. Place the car jack underneath the chassis close to the front of your vehicle. If you're unsure about the exact jacking point of your vehicle, consult the vehicle's manual for more information.
  • Restrain the vehicle with a wheel block. Whether you hold up your car with a jack or drive it onto ramps, the last thing you want is your car rolling away while working on it. So, place a wheel block or a strong piece of wood behind a rear tire to hold it in place. If your parking spot is slightly angled, place the block behind both rear tires to be safe. Push the hood of your car a few times to ensure your vehicle is stable

Drain the Oil

  • Position the oil drain pan directly beneath the engine drain plug. You can find the plug about 2 feet from the front of your vehicle and sits beneath the engine. Once you've located the oil engine drain plug, place the drain pan beneath it until it is centered in place.
  • Open the hood of your Hyundai vehicle, locate the oil cap and remove it. To unscrew the cap, grasp it firmly and twist it in a counterclockwise direction till it comes off.
  • Loosen the oil plug with a crescent wrench or socket.
  • After successfully opening the oil plug, wait a few minutes to ensure it is fully drained.

Replace the Oil Filter

  • Look for the filter assembly underneath the hood of your vehicle.
  • In a counterclockwise direction, twist steadily and slowly to remove it
  • Run a thin layer of the replacement oil onto the gasket to prepare the new filter
  • Screw and tighten the newly lubricated filter firmly into place

Add New Oil

  • Carefully pour the new replacement oil into the fill hold of your car's engine.
  • Once done, return the fill cap to its former position in the oil fill hold.
  • Start your car's engine and monitor the oil pressure light
  • Turn off the vehicle and use a dipstick to check the oil levels.
